The Numbers Are In! The Business Value of HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity

Physicist Niels Bohr once famously remarked that “prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future.” He wasn’t far wrong – and I’m guessing he never had to work the numbers on the likely economic impact of a major data center investment.

The projected returns on the more innovative types of technologies can be especially hard to estimate, which is why we asked Forrester Consulting to quantify some of the key benefits of HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity, our consumption-based, on-premises IT infrastructure solution. HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity gives you the flexibility and scalability of cloud, but with all the performance and data protection advantages of in-house IT. “Like having the features of cloud but on-premises,” is how one customer recently described it.1

Forrester interviewed IT leaders at five global organizations with HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity in place. The goal was to build a picture of the risk-adjusted business benefits and cost savings enabled by the solution, based on real-world deployments. The numbers are now in; if you have just a couple of minutes, check out this handy Forrester infographic. I’d strongly recommend taking a look at the full study, The Total Economic Impact of HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity. It’s well worth your time – full of detailed insights about the numbers, as well as comments from IT folks who have seen the benefits for their business first-hand.

Even better, you can get a high-level estimate of the potential benefits for your company – just plug in a few of your own numbers at our HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity Estimator. This is a great tool if you’re looking for something you can put in front of your board, for example.

*Spoiler alert*: I’m going to offer a few thoughts on the headline results of the study, as shown in the graphic below. The dollar amounts shown refer to the results for Forrester’s “composite organization,” a representation based on the companies that Forrester interviewed.

Shortened time-to-market in deploying global IT projects by 65 percent. This was the biggest benefit identified. It tallies closely with what I hear in conversations with customers, which often goes along these lines: “With Flex Capacity, we’ve got this pool of IT resources we can use whenever somebody comes up with a project. We don’t have to go ask for more money or go through a whole long purchasing cycle – we just do it. Then we regroup and see how much we used. And if we’re in danger of running out it’s easy to get more.”

Reduced Capex spend by 30 percent. Savings from avoided server and storage costs accounted for 20 percent of the total benefits of the solution. HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity reduces both over- and under-provisioning; it enables businesses to scale usage up or down as needed, while paying only for what they use 2.

Reduction in professional services/contractor costs. HPE GreenLake Flex Capacity enabled these businesses to discontinue some professional services previously needed to configure and manage the infrastructure. This accounted for 9 percent of the overall benefit.

IT resource savings (support, admin, planning). HPE GreenLake removes a lot of routine, repetitive work for IT staffers. According to the report, “one customer explained that since the heavy lifting in data center management – including support, admin, and planning – shifted to HPE Pointnext support, the internal IT team could take on a more strategic role.”

Of course, every company will see different results. Prediction is always going to be difficult, as long as it’s about the future. But we think this study will be helpful for companies looking to get an initial fix on some very impressive potential benefits.
